Subject of master thesis:
Characterization of Microbial colonization of three churches’ mural paintings in the North of Portugal
The main goal of our master dissertation is the characterization of microbial presence and its activity translated
in the form of dark stains patent in mural painting in three case studies of our choice: 15th century Igreja Paroquial
de Valadares (Baião), 16th century Igreja de Santa Eulália/Igreja de São Salvador de Arnoso (Vila Nova de Famalicão)
and 16th century Igreja de Santa Cristina de Serzedelo (Guimarães).
Altough three ensembles might be considered a short universe we hope it will be representative of a micro-cosmos in
which the similarities between the cases will enable us to draw conclusions, as well as tested treatments, valid for other
monuments framed in analogous material and technical characteristics.
